Championship-winning engineer returns as consultant

Team KOOL Green announced today that veteran Tony Cicale has rejoined the team as a consultant who will review all aspects of team performance and assist Paul Tracy and race engineer John Dick on race weekends during the 1999 FedEx Championship Series through the Portland event.

The announcement reunites one of racing's most respected engineering talents with one of the most successful Champ Car organizations of the '90s. Cicale worked with the team when driver Jacques Villeneuve raced Toyota Atlantic and Champ Cars, winning the 1995 Indy 500 and the PPG Indy Car World Series. After a year's sabbatical, he returned to Team KOOL Green with Parker Johnstone in the CART series, then pursued other interests while the team added three more Champ Car wins to its record in 1998.

"I'm thrilled, as is everyone at Team KOOL Green, to have Tony back with us," said team owner Barry Green. "I have the utmost respect for him professionally, but more that that, we're good friends. We stay in touch when we're not working together and I never miss an opportunity to see if he's interested in what we've got going and whether he'd like to be involved. When we talked a few weeks ago his answer was 'Yes.'

"I've always maintained that the first part of a championship is the most critical phase of the season. It's when you have to make sure you finish races and earn points at every possible opportunity. Nobody on our team underestimates the strength and the depth of the competition in CART today, and we look at doing everything possible to improve our chances of winning races and the FedEx Championship. There's no doubt in my mind that having Tony as part of our team will do just that."

Cicale attended Team KOOL Green's final pre-season test last week at Miami- Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, where he spent time working with both Tracy and teammate Dario Franchitti.

"I had the opportunity to work with Paul and Dario at Homestead, and I was very impressed with both drivers," said Cicale. "They're both highly talented, highly motivated individuals and, working together with this team, I believe they are capable of considerable success. I'm looking forward to working with John and Paul, in particular, and doing whatever I can to help them achieve that success."

Cicale's first race in his consulting role will be the CART season-opener at Homestead, March 19-21.
