Alex Barron on top of the speed charts on Monday

By Delane Rouse

CART Testing activities at Nazareth Speedway continued on Monday.

Attendees: Alex Barron, Cristiano da Matta, Scott Pruett, Tony Kannan, Tarso Marques, Juan Montoya, Adrian Fernandez, Gil de Ferran.

All teams are testing the single element superspeedway wing package.

Temperatures were nice but it was very windy, track temperatures 94-96 degrees. With the superspeedway wing, all times are slower by up to 1.5 seconds when compared with 1998 lap times. Teams think that this will reduce the passing opportunities at Nazareth this year (opposite of what we see on the real superspeedways where the Handford device has produced race featuring a lot of passing).

AAR's Alex Barron discussed the Toyota engine development and stated that Toyota has made gains in all areas of the engine development (top end, torque, reliability). He also made some interesting comments about how he was overwhelmed with the level of competition in 1998, coming up form Toyota Atlantics.

Teams concentrated on tires, set-up and the superspeedway wing use.

Two minor incidents occurred during testing. Gil de Ferran and Tarso Marques were both involved in one-car incidents, but neither was injured.

1. Alex Barron Eagle/Toyota (AAR) 20.17 sec.

6. Christiano da Matta Reynard/Toyota (Arciero) 20.60 sec.
