Brazilian impressed during Nazareth test

Marlboro Team Penske announced that Brazilian driver Tarso Marques will drive their car during the next event at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. Al Unser Jr., the regular driver of the #2 Penske Mercedes, is recovering from a broken right ankle, sustained in a crash in the first lap of Miami GP at Homestead on March 21.

23-year-old Marques successfully test at Nazareth Speedway on Monday and Tuesday. He ran 366 miles and was among the fastest drivers present. He spun and damaged the car on Tuesday, but Roger Penske was impressed enough to announce that Tarso would pilot his car in Japan.

Earlier this year, Marquez tested impressively for Payton-Coyne Racing and was expected to compete for the team during the 1999 FedEx Championship series. This did not happen as Luiz Garcia Jr. joined Payton-Coyne shortly after these tests, bringing along a sponsor ready to fund his ride for the whole season.

Marquez has been confirmed to race at Motegi, but it is expected that he will also start for Penske at Long Beach. Al Unser Jr. is expected to return to driving duty for the Bosch Sparkplug Grand Prix presented by Toyota at Nazareth Speedway in early May.
