No injuries, but heated arguments after wreck

In the early laps of the second practice at Twin Ring Motegi, Michael Andretti and Juan Montoya made heavy contact with the wall after touching tires. Montoya, who had been running fast in the morning session was trying to pass Andretti, but picked a line that turned his car into Andretti's.

Following the incident, Michael Andretti was furious about the Colombian driver, who didn't share the same view about the seriousness of the incident.

Weather conditions were difficult, with low temperatures and high winds making it more difficult for drivers to warm up tires. Montoya almost cleared Andretti before his rear tire made contact with Andretti's left front. Possibly a justifiable rookie mistake, but Andretti and his team owner Carl Haas were furious about this kind of incident happening in the early laps of a first day practice session.

Wally Dallenbach agreed with Andretti's assessment of the incident and placed Montoya on probation and fined him $5000.
