PacWest driver scapes injury in heavy crash at Gateway

By Dan Proudfoot

Mark Blundell emerged without serious injury from a heavy crash in testing at Gateway International Raceway Tuesday that broke the g-force measurement in his Motorola Reynard Mercedes' data acquisition system.

The CART FedEx Championship racer was released from St. Louis University Hospital yesterday after being held for observation following CAT scan examinations there and at

St. Elizabeth Medical Centre at Granite City, Ill., that indicated no concussion.

Ironically, Blundell last week spoke out strongly against CART racing at Nazareth Speedway, saying the .946-mile oval wasn't safe with the Champ Cars topping 900 horsepower and running small wings mandated to slow cornering speeds.

But Tuesday's crash had nothing to do with the contentious wing, but was caused by the gear selection system locking the rear wheels as Blundell attempted down-shifting from fifth to fourth. Blundell, described as bruised but in good spirits, was in transit to his home at Scottsdale, Ariz., last night and could not be reached for comment.

Greg Moore crashed heavily in Japan last year with a similar gear malfunction, as did Mauricio Gugelmin, Blundell's teammate at PacQest Racing, last year at Nazareth.
