Injury delays Blundell's return to CART competition

Motorola PacWest driver Mark Blundell will return to FedEx Championship Series competition in four to six weeks. PacWest President Bruce R. McCaw announced today. Blundell sustained a small fracture of the 7th cervical vertebrae as a result of a May 4th testing accident at Gateway International Raceway. The injury was discovered while Blundell was being treated by physicians near his home in Phoenix, Arizona.

"Mark has an injury that is not really seen in any sport other than racing," explained Dr. Steve Olvey, director of medical affairs for CART. "He had a large collection of fluid in the low back area as a result of a very high speed impact. Many physicians in the country haven't seen this."

"When Mark returned home he was experiencing some pain and discomfort in the neck and shoulder area," continued Olvey. "He underwent another CAT scan on his neck as well as a bone scan and they found that he had a small fracture of the 7th cervical vertebrae."

Blundell is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks while the injury is allowed to heal. During that period, Blundell will wear a cervical collar.

"I'm obviously deeply disappointed to be missing races," said Blundell. "In one respect, I'm happy because the doctors found the problem. It could have been much worse. Although I won't be able to race at the Motorola 300, I'm planning on being there to support the team and Motorola in person."

Brazilian Roberto Moreno filled in for Blundell at the Rio 200, finishing eleventh in the #18 Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz. The team will announce Blundell's replacement for upcoming races in the near future.
