Adjusted provisional result becomes official

CART Stewards completed the inquiry regarding a possible infraction involving Gil de Ferran of Walker Racing and announced today that the provisional results of Sunday's Miller Lite 225 will stand and are official.

CART Stewards reviewed video and interviewed team personnel in reaching the decision not to penalize de Ferran for a pass during a caution period in regard to the circumstances surrounding the realignment of the field prior to the restart on Lap 219, the last caution of the 225-lap FedEx Championship Series event at The Milwaukee Mile.

The stewards reached the decision based on the facts that there were communication problems between the Player's Forsythe Racing pits and Carpentier as well as race control and its pit officials with Walker Racing. With that decision, de Ferran's third-place finish stands from the provisional results.

The incident in question began as a result of an extremely short green period - approximately one-third of a lap on the 1.032-mile oval -after the restart on Lap 217. During this lap, which began green and quickly went yellow due a slight spin by PJ Jones, Carpentier passed de Ferran and Scott Pruett. The pass of Pruett was identified by Carpentier to have come during the caution period and Carpentier immediately took his place behind Pruett and ahead of de Ferran.

Carpentier's pass of de Ferran was simultaneous with the caution coming out and thereby Carpentier awaited instructions as to his position in the lineup. Unable to receive definitive instructions from his pits, Carpentier moved high on the backstretch to allow de Ferran to move forward in the lineup in anticipation of instructions by officials to fall back.
