Andretti Earns Pole at Road America

Veteran successfully defends 1998 pole

Michael Andretti of Newman/Haas Racing successfully defended his Texaco/Havoline 200 top starting position position Saturday, when he earned the pole for Sunday's 10th round of the FedEx Championship Series at Elkahrt Lake's Road America.

Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford Swift), whose pole position at Road America last year was his first since 1995, recorded a top lap of 145.428 miles per hour (233.994 km/h) on the 4.048-mile permanent road course.

Andretti is a three-time winner at Road America (1990, '91, '96) and has scored PPG Cup points in nine of his 14 career starts at the venue.

FedEx Championship Series points leader Juan Montoya (Target Honda Reynard) qualified 145.227 miles per hour (233.670 km/h) Montoya, who holds a 112-87 points lead over Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Honda Reynard), accomplished his eighth consecutive top-five start but missed his fifth pole of the season by a mere 0.139 seconds.

De Ferran will start third with a qualifying lap of 144.921 miles per hour (233.178 km/h)
