Testing accident knocks Newman/Haas driver unconscious

A testing accident at Gateway International Raceway knocked Christian Fittipaldi unconscious on Monday. Because CART rules don't allow drivers who were knocked unconscious to compete for at least seven days, the currently fourth-ranked driver in the CART FedEx Championship Series will have to sit out the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit next weekend.

Fittipaldi has missed races in the past - most recently the Milwaukee Mile event in 1998, when he was knocked unconscious in a practice accident. However, this season, Fittipaldi is enjoying his best CART season on record. Skipping the Detroit race at this point in the season could be a costly penalty.

Fittipaldi's car may be piloted by "super sub" Roberto Moreno, who just successfully filled in for several races at Pacwest, replacing Mark Blundell who was injured earlier this season in a testing incident at Gateway as well. Moreno had to vacate that seat for the returning Blundell. Last season Moreno drove the Newman/Haas #11 car after Fittipaldi's practice crash in Milwaukee, and in 1997 Moreno filled in for Fittipaldi at multiple events, including the Detroit Grand Prix.
