Fontana will be last race of Penske chassis

Roger Penske announced that Marlboro Team Penske will campaign a Reynard chassis during the 2000 season. After a season of evaluating the Penske chassis against the Lola, and still failing to be competitive with the front-runners, Penske was ready to make major changes.

Penske will use the Penske Cars Ltd. facility at Poole, England, to customize their future cars. The availability of such a facility that in the past used to build complete custom cars may give Penske that competitive edge they had hoped to gain with their completely unique car designs. The last time their own design dominated was in 1994, when Al Unser Jr won the last title for the team.

After winning a record 99 CART races, Penske has not been to winner's circle since 1996. Switching to a package that is more similar to what has been successful in recent years will bring the team closer to a level playing field with the current top teams.
