Rumor suggests Herta to drive Eagle with Ford power in 2000

Remember last year, when we first posted that Papis would go to Rahal last year? We were pretty confident thatthe source then was solid. Today, we are pretty confident that we have another inside scoop nobody even remotely predicted. Actually, even in our forums, none of the resident experts even considered this scenario in their wildest predictions for the 2000 season. However, given it sounds like a complete departure from anything that has happened over the silly season in recent years, treat this information as such: a rumor.

What we were told: Bryan Herta signed with Gurney. Herta will run an Eagle chassis with Ford power, married to a Swift gearbox acquired from Patrick Racing. Supposedly it is already a done deal, gearboxes delivered, contract signed.

An American driver, with Ford power in the Gurney Eagle chassis, converted with a Swift gearboxpurchased from Patrick ta accept a Ford powerplant.... All "American" Racers throughout if they keep the Goodyear tires.

In our silly season tracking table, we'rekeeping a slot for a second driver for AAR, because Gurney has recently been hiring staff. We expect expansion back to a two car team Gurney operated before 1999.

We are also leaving Toyota in place for that second car, because Gurney's relationship with Toyotagoes way back. A sudden shift away from that association would be very unlikely. Toyota may have signed off on this to get direct comparison data with one of theknown top engines, driven by a driver who has won with that engine.

Again - don't quote us on this one. But if any of this is true, you read it here first.
