Gidley to run shifter kart in Hawaii

By Earl Ma

Honolulu, Nov. 30 - The collapse of the Hawaiian Super Prix notwithstanding, a CART driver will still see some on-track activity in the 50th state at year's end.

Fresh off his rookie CART campaign which saw him score points for both Derrick Walker and Dale Coyne's teams, Memo Gidley will appear at Hawaii Raceway Park on Leeward Oahu on December 10 and 11, promoting the Hawaii Shifter Kart Racing School's new semester of classes beginning this coming January.

Like many of his CART colleagues, Gidley is no stranger to shifter karts, having competed in IKF and NSKA-sanctioned karting events throughout the decade. He swept both heats and the main event in the 1999 Shifter Kart USA North American Karting Championship's 125cc S1 Pro class in Las Vegas this November, the same weekend the Super Prix would have run at Kalaeloa Airport - a scant few miles away from Hawaii Raceway Park.

Along with local karting enthusiasts, Gidley will do several laps in his SKUSA-winning Trackmagic shifter kart, which the school will fly in from San Francisco via air cargo expressly for this event. Gidley will hold trackside tutoring and Q&A sessions for karters, local news media, and others on both days.

The number of shifter karts on Oahu has doubled over the past year, with the likes of Formula 1 veteran Andrea deCesaris sampling the facility on occasion. Compared to other forms of motorsport available on the island, karts provide an affordable entry point into the sport, with 80 cc models available ready-to-race for as low as $5,000.

Other items on Gidley's itinerary for his four-day working vacation include a media get-together at world-famous Nick's Fishmarket that Thursday night, appearances on various TV and radio shows the following morning, an autograph session at All-Star Cafe in Waikiki that afternoon, and a "Baywatch Hawaii" cast party Saturday night.
