Saturday Morning Pit Notes

 

• In the first round of qualifying yesterday, #12 BRACK mastered the course and grabbed the provisional pole which earned him a crucial championship point with a tour of 1:10.066 (114.989 mph). A spot on the front row and another championship point is up for grabs this afternoon in the second qualifying session.

• CART FedEx Championship Series Starter Jim Swintal waves the GREEN FLAG at 10 a.m. to open the weekend’s second session of practice for the Champ Cars.

• At 10:04 a.m., #51 FERNANDEZ (51mph) has been warned by CART Officials for exceeding the pit lane speed limit of 50 mph.

• RED FLAG at 10:06 a.m. for #32 CARPENTIER who has stopped on course driver’s right in Turn 2. #5 TAKAGI has turned the fastest time of the session with a 1:12.784 (110.696 mph). #8 VASSER clocked at 56 mph in pit lane and will receive the BLACK FLAG when the session resumes. #32 CARPENTIER is being towed back to pit lane by the Simple Green CART Safety Team and will serve an eight-minute penalty for the stoppage when the GREEN FLAG flies.

• GREEN FLAG at 10:10 a.m. #8 VASSER comes onto pit lane to serve the penalty.

• At 10:13 a.m., #32 CARPENTIER turns the fastest lap of the session with a 1:12.584 (111:000 mph).

• At 10:14 a.m., #6 DA MATTA wastes no time getting to the top of the speed chart with a 1:11.038 (113.415 mph).

• RED FLAG at 10:15 a.m. for #27 FRANCHITTI who spun off course driver’s right in Turn 6. The Simple Green CART Safety Team digs the car out of the gravel trap, but it will go on the hook back to pit lane because the car would dump gravel down the course if they towed it out of the trap.

• GREEN FLAG at 10:26 a.m.

• At 10:32 a.m., #12 BRACK (51 mph) receives a warning for pit lane speed violation.

• At 10:33 a.m., #8 VASSER tops the speed chart with a lap of 1:10.872 (113.681 mph). #27 FRANCHITTI has served his penalty.

• At 10:37 a.m., #52 NAKANO appears to have left pit lane with an air jack not recessed into the chassis.

• At 10:39 a.m., #6 DA MATTA is fastest with a 1:10.735 (113.901 mph) on his 15th tour.

• At 10:40 a.m., #6 DA MATTA turns the fastest time of the weekend with a 1:09.776 (115.467 mph), followed by #10 KANAAN, #51 FERNANDEZ, #8 VASSER and #32 CARPENTIER.

• At 10:41 a.m., #6 DA MATTA is really dialed in now and raises the bar with a 1:09.701 (115.591 mph).

• At 10:43 a.m., #6 DA MATTA (51 mph) receives a warning for speeding on pit lane.

• RED FLAG at 10:44 a.m. for #5 TAKAGI who has backed into the tire wall at the top of the Corkscrew diver’s right in Turn 8. The Simple Green CART Safety Team removes his car and he will coast down Turns 8, 9 and 10 to pit lane.

• GREEN FLAG at 10:49 a.m. #5 TAKAGI will serve an eight-minute penalty.

• At 10:55 a.m., #6 DA MATTA speeds through pit lane at 51 mph. #6 DA MATTA is still fastest with a 1:09.701 (115.591 mph), followed by #11 FITTIPALDI, #10 KANAAN, #51 FERNANDEZ and #8 VASSER.

• At 10:57 a.m., #5 TAKAGI has served his penalty and may return on course. Just over 17 minutes remain in the session. #9 JOURDAIN has spun entering pit lane and continues on.

• At 10:59 a.m., #6 DA MATTA returns on course and receives the BLACK FLAG for speeding on pit lane when he came in last time.

• At 11:02 a.m., #33 TAGLIANI turns the third-fastest time with a 1:10.727 (113.914 mph).

• At 11:04 a.m., #33 TAGLIANI turns the second-fastest time with a 1:10.470 (114.330 mph).

• At 11:05 a.m., #55 DOMINGUEZ (55 mph) will serve a penalty for violating the pit lane speed limit.

• At 11:06 a.m., #10 KANAAN turns in the second-fastest time of the session with a 1:09.885 (115.287 mph), the only driver to join #6 DA MATTA in the 1:09.000 range.

• At 11:09 a.m., #12 BRACK laps at 1:09.865 (115.320 mph) and now stands second on the speed chart.

• RED/CHECKERED FLAG at 11:13 a.m. for #55 DOMINGUEZ who is stopped driver’s right between Turns 8 and 9. The Simple Green CART Safety Team is reporting that the car has clutch problems and is stuck in gear. #6 DA MATTA paces the session with a lap of 1:09.701 (115.591 mph), followed by #12 BRACK with a 1:09.865 (115.320 mph), #10 KANAAN with a 1:09.885 (115.287 mph), #11 FITTIPALDI with a 1:10408 (114.430 mph) and #33 TAGLIANI with a 1:10470 (114.330 mph).
