Race No. 5 Rio 400 Saturday Quotes from Rio: |
Target Chip Ganassi Racing Reynard Honda Qualified: 2nd
ALEX ZANARDI | |
The car was not asgood this morning. We had a little misfire this morning and Icouldn't run well, so I'm not really surprised that I went faster thisafternoon. I'd like to congratulate Tony [Kanaan] on his firstappearance in the press conference, and remind him that my firstappearance in the press conference came in Rio [in 1996, afterZanardi won his first career pole position during his rookieseason]. |
Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford Qualified: 8th
MICHAEL ANDRETTI | |
The car was all messed up. The car was definitely better than an eighth-place car. The display said I was in sixth gear when I was actually in fifth. |
Budweiser/Ralph's Della Penna Racing Swift Ford Qualified: 28th
RICHIE HEARN | |
Basically, the track was really slick. We took some downforce out to get extra speed, and it looks like we took too much out. |
Hollywood Reynard Mercedes Qualified: 21st
MAURICIO GUGELMIN | |
I'm pretty disappointed. Hopefully we got our bad day out of the way today. Last year we had the pole but crashed in the race. It's a long race, so anything can happen. |
PacWest Motorola Reynard Mercedes Qualified: 18th
MARK BLUNDELL | |
I know we had potential to do better than the result showed. The major factor was a lack of grip caused by low tire pressures on a dusty track. Last year we started 20th and worked our way up to 8th, so we'll just work our way to the front and hope for a podium. |
Visteon Reynard Ford Qualified: 15th
SCOTT PRUETT | |
There is no groove and the track is very slippery. The Visteon car was very nervous. Itfeels like we are driving on ball bearings. The track is difficult. You can't get anyconsistency. |
LCI International Tasman Motorsports Group Reynard Honda Qualified: 3rd
TONY KANAAN | |
For sure, this is a big result for me -- starting third in my home country.I am very happy but this is just the start. We still have a lot to do.Qualifying in Champ Cars really doesn't matter. It is just so competitive. We need to try to keep calm and finish the race. We have a good car and the entireTasman team did a perfect job. I did only about 60 laps total over the twodays because we had gearbox problems, and the car was good from the beginning. I would really like to say thanks to my engineers, Steve (Horne) and my mechanics because without them I couldn't have done it. They worked so hard. This is kind of a respect that I can give them after a tough two days. I remember Steve (Horne) coming up to me after we finished ninth in Nazareth. He said 'Okay Tony, from now on we can push a little bit harder a I am not going to hold you back as much. Let's say your target for qualifying in Rio will be top six'. We came here with that goal and I did three positions better than he asked me. I wish for the next race that he would say top three and I can do first for him. I've had a problem bothdays with the gearbox and only did 40 laps total. Fortunately, LCIand the Tasman team did a good job [with the setup]. We didn'tchange the setup since we arrived here. We just changed onerear spring, so that tells you the car was good right away. Butwe've proved in Champ Cars that qualifying means nothing. Nowit's important to go out and do well in the race. |
Team Kool Green Reynard Honda Qualified: 9th
PAUL TRACY | |
I was a little uncomfortable going out not knowing what the trackconditions would be like probably because of the spin yesterday and thefact that there were a couple of spins already in qualifying. We put a littlemore wing in the car, but I was a little bit tentative and didn't get the mostout of the car. I didn't really attack until the last turn of the last lap to seehow it would hold and we made up 4/10ths of a second from my first lap tothe second. |
Team Kool Green Reynard Honda Qualified: 1st
DARIO FRANCHITTI | |
It wasn't a perfect lap, but I'll take it just the same. The Team KOOLGreen guys prepared a great car and gave me the chance to show whatwe can do. Don Halliday, my engineer, went to Paul (Tracy) after his runand asked him about the track conditions. Paul said it wasn't as bad as itlooked, so Don decided to not make any changes to the car. Tomorrow iswhat it's all about -- finishing up front -- and I think we can do it. The trackis very good for passing, but it's going to be a difficult because the circuit isvery slippery. |
Forsythe Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes Qualified: 17th
PATRICK CARPENTIER | |
We got everything we had out of the car. It had no more to give. It's unfortunate because we had a good car in Nazareth, whichhelped us get the pole position, but we've been chasing the setup here thisweekend. The Blue Crew is going to make some changes, so hopefully we'll be alot quicker for the race. |
Tecate Beer/Quaker State Patrick Racing Reynard Ford Qualified: 12th
ADRIAN FERNANDEZ | |
We made some corrections to the Tecate/Quaker State car after Scott (teammate ScottPruett) had his qualifying run but, the car was still loose. It was too loose on the exit andhad a push on entry. I made a catch on the first warm-up lap coming out of Turn 4, so I knew my first lap wouldnot be that good. It definitely got my attention. Turn 4 is tough. As soon as you put thepower down the car goes loose. There is something wrong there. The race is going to be tricky. There is no grip on the race track. It is like driving in therain. |
Forsythe Player's-Indeck Reynard Mercedes Qualified: 7th
GREG MOORE | |
We almost made it! I think we could have gotten the pole if I finished thelast lap. I got deep into the turn and the car started to drift, so I backed offand then it snapped around on me. Normally we have a good setupat this race. Hopefully we'll have a hot day tomorrow, no yellows, 133 laps ofgreen racing, and we'll take some points, too. |
