Intense colors altogether - he also drove better than in many seasons before, leading a few laps of the race until a long pit stop cost him a really good finish. No ride in '98?

This is one of these 'let's try it anyway' photos, of which most never turn out. I was shooting head-on angles of cars coming into the 90 degree turn at the end of the Long Beach back stretch (see Macho Michael), when I got bored with the same old frontal shots. There was a rather large hole in the fence that just begged for some fast pans with the cars. Never being shy to get as close as possible to the action, I just used the same lens I just had pointed at cars 100 feet further away. I never noticed the red Firestone sign until i scanned these photos...
