Spotmeter is the name of the game here. Dark shadows and harsh light, but no fill flash mean either black faces in helmets, or extremely bright light around them. Shooting really tight like this eliminates the contrast problem, but one still needs to get the image exposed properly. I once hears a rule that helps determine the minimum shutter speed you can safely hand-hold a long lens (e.g. 500mm = 1/500th sec). Well - forget 'safely' and you might get some cool pictures. The flare in front of Robby's nose is his car's antenna, completely out of focus.
