"We made some changes to the chassis that we're happy with. Our biggest problem is trying to control the boost. But we're confident we'll get everything set."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI
"I'm very pleased with the car. I know we don't have a shot at the pole but I also know that we have a good race car. We'll probably be eighth quick. It takes a race car that will run all day to win this race."

"We didn't come here to test as a team, so we didn't know what to expect. The times all had to do with getting towed around out there. That's one of the biggest things about Michigan, these times that you really aren't relevant to what you're going to see in qualifying. Most of the speeds you're seeing today are the result of getting a tow around out there for higher straight-away speeds."

(On different aspects of the car) "You do have to be a little bit more deliberate on the line you take through the turn. The cars aren't quite as forgiving. Especially when we came here for the US 500 last year: the temperatures were a little cooler, you had a little bit more downforce, and you didn't even have to hesitate about running flat her right away. Whereas now, you still have that little bit of effort to force yourself to keep that foot down there."

(On keys to the race) "There are so many concerns when you come into a 500 mile race, the biggest being durability. For us, taking the lead with about 20 laps to go last year, and then having an engine failure in the lead with about five laps to go was pretty tough. But Ford has made huge steps forward from last year to this year both in terms of horsepower and reliability."

"Basically we're still running with an eye toward a race car for Sunday. To truly go for outright speed is not our aim at this point. We're just trying to get the car consistent and comfortable to drive. We turned a reasonable time at the end. We're very encouraged. That we were able to turn a time when we needed to put an answer to some questions. Overall a very good day for the PacWest team."

(What it takes to win this race) "First you have to finish. Believe it or not, the U.S. 500 is harder on you mentally than it is physically. It's a race of survival. It almost takes one part good luck, and one part skill. I'm more comfortable with the car after the second session. I was able to get more out of it in Turns 3 and 4. I'm concentrating on what has to be done in qualifying by trying to run alone. We're going to take it one step at a time. I didn't get much testing on speedways with the Swift before my accident so we're making up for lost time. We'll get there, though. I think that a lot of the speeds we've seen so far won't be there in qualifying."

"I feel a lot more comfortable with the INDUSVAL-Marlboro Reynard- Ford Cosworth this afternoon so I was able to push myself harder and it shows with the speed increase. I wasn't too comfortable this morning and I asked the Davis Racing team not to make any changes until I was ready. Now that I'm feeling the car and what it's doing, we're able to dial it in. When I did my 228 lap) I was out there by myself; but when I did the 229, I might have received a slight tow. That was as fast as I was able to go at the time, but the engineers tell me there's more. I guess it's a case where the driver was flat out, but the computer wasn't. But now we know where we can improve and go faster."

"I'm pretty happy with my car. The motor is pushing strong and the tires are consistent. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that everything keeps for the 500 miles."

"We were working for the race this afternoon and trying a lot of different things. The car is good. We definitely made improvements from the first practice."

"It feels really good to have a good car. We have an amazing setup for going fast here even though we have never tested on a superspeedway this year. We just put the car on the track and I was able to drive it flat out. In the afternoon practice session, we concentrated on race setups and ran with full tanks a lot. That did make the car feel different, but we will make some changes to adjust for that. We obviously needed to know what the car would be like in race conditions so now we have a direction for the race as well as qualifying. I've had people ask me what it felt like to go 230 miles per hour and all I can say is that it feels great. I hope we can go faster tomorrow."

"The car feels a lot better than we were here testing (four weeks ago). Then it felt like there was a snake under the car it was sliding around so much. The engineers have done a great job making the car more comfortable to drive, especially in traffic. I still had a bit of push in the car, but that's the way you want it around this place."

(On the team's fast start) "I need to take my hat off to our engineer, because we didn't test here. Right out of the box my car felt pretty good, even my spare car. So that's what has made Scott and myself really comfortable and really work with the car. My car ran pretty good even in some traffic it wasn't completely scary and by myself it was quite good. I think we'll have a good race."

(On what to expect during qualifying) "I think by yourself I don't know if you can achieve this much speed. I know I tried to do my runs by myself, but it was quite difficult. Even if you don't want you end up in a tow down the straights. I don't know how fast we can go in qualifying, but I think it will be 232... 231 (mph)."

(On the track surface) "I think the track was pretty smooth, even better than last year. I don't have any problems with bumps. Actually, I don't feel any bumps. It seems quite nice."

(On the tunnel blockers) "Before we got here, I think it was a big concern and everyone was running more carefully feeling the cars and not running close together until they could build up the confidence and setup the car for the track. I think people are starting to get more comfortable and the speeds are up. I think for the race, still, we need to be careful. You can run fast behind one, two cars. I ran close and the car changes. It definitely will not be as comfortable as last year. I think we need to be careful at the start, and when we run a lot of cars together."

"Well, we are working on the car for the race. I'm quite happy with the run and it seems to be running OK. Tomorrow is a big day for us."
