Bill Patterson's Biography
Bill's artistic endeavors and his enthusiasm for motor racing began early
and was a significant part of his childhood and education, but he did not
take seriously the idea of making a career of auto racing art until well
into his first career as a practicing Architect.
He went to his first race while living in Argentina in 1967 at the age of
14 and was hooked on the sport immediately. Pen and ink and pencil sketches
covered the walls of his room along with magazine cut-outs of Formula 1,
Indy, Can-Am, and the cars that ran the local series.
Bill attended his first World Championship Formula 1 event in 1985
and became hooked again. Returning home from the Mexican Grand Prix in 1987
he resolved to try and capture on paper some part of the energy and excitement
from that race in particular and motor racing in general, and spent several
years developing his craft before taking it on the road and showing his
work at galleries and race tracks in the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
During this relatively short time Bill's works have been well received by
many at the top of the racing art business and has received the endorsement
of the 1992 World Champion and 1993 Indycar Champion Nigel Mansell, Al Unser,
Jr., Robby Gordon and Scott Pruett who have each signed editions of Bill's
prints. Bill was commissioned in 1994, 1995 and now in 1996 for the art
that became the cover of the Cleveland Grand Prix program and poster.
Bill has also designed and produced a line of embroidery and silk screened
Tee-shirts which are sought after by race fans year after year. Tee shirt
design clients include Robby Gordon, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Nigel
Mansell, Raul Boesel, as well as event shirts for Cleveland, Long Beach,
Detroit and Portland.
Bill's passion for the human as well as mechanical demands of auto racing
is the inspiration for his works. "Racing cars are at once extremely
rare and delicate pieces of art as well as being uncompromisingly brutal
and efficient in performing their intended tasks. As an Architect it strikes
me that a racing car, specially an open wheel car or sports car, is the
purest example of form following function. The first class athletes that
pilot these machines must have incredible powers of concentration and control
to fulfill their machines' potential. It is this mix of mental, physical,
and mechanical capacities and extremes that inspires me to try to communicate
to the viewer of my art.
Bill is 42 and works out of his studio/office in Madison, Wisconsin.
